The 2016 Honda Pilot Elite represents the third generation of Honda's big SUV, and this year's refresh is a stylish, refined and fuel-efficient contender in the crossover category. Tom Voelk, auto writer for The New York Times, spent some time behind the wheel of the 2016 Pilot Elite and likes the model's latest improvements.
The Pilot Elite is a big, comfortable people-mover, with significantly more room that its CR-V sibling. But the 2016 Pilot borrows body design from the CR-V to great effect. A slightly larger but more athletic look attracts interested second looks. The standard Pilot seats eight passengers, while the Elite is capped at seven. In either case, the second row will comfortably hold three child seats across.
The 3.5-liter six-cylinder engine delivers 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque and gets the Pilot Elite to 60 mph in about seven seconds. The Environmental Protection Agency gives the all-wheel-drive models a combined 22 mpg.
